Annual World Metrology Day awards - nominations now open!

Nominations for the 2016 Barry Inglis Medal and NMI Prize have opened to recognise outstanding accomplishment in measurement research or practice.

Each year, the National Measurement Institute presents the two awards to individuals or groups who have made a highly significant contribution to the science of measurement, or who have had long-standing eminence in the field of measurement and its application and practice.

The awards are made annually to commemorate World Metrology Day, which is an international event marking the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875.  The Metre Convention sets the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its application in industry, science and society.

Good measurement has relevance broader than direct applications in science and technology.  It can form the basis for decisions in trade, economics, health and the environment, just to name a few.

Valued at A$2,000 each, the awards are means of promoting and fostering the application of measurement science and techniques in innovative fields.

Last year’s recipients, Dr Graham Jones (Barry Inglis Medal) and Dr Alessandro Rossi (NMI Prize), worked in two diverse fields: medical pathology and quantum electrical metrology respectively.  They were recognised for their significant contributions towards the practical application of measurement in their fields of expertise.

Self-nominations as well as nominations by colleagues or managers are all welcome.
