What does using an accredited facility mean to you as a Consumer?

Every day, Australians rely on testing, measurement, inspection and related activities in some way.  This may be directly - for example, by having a pathology test, or indirectly – for example, much of the food we eat and the water we drink is tested to ensure that it is safe.

Many of the products that we buy and services that we use are tested or inspected to appropriate standards. 

Standards touch so many areas of our lives from car safety to hospital equipment.

NATA accredits competent facilities to perform the testing and inspection activities for those products and services.  This gives consumers the assurance they need to make safe, healthy and reliable choices.

NATA provides an online directory of its accredited facilities, which is updated on a daily basis. The directory is widely marketed by NATA to industry, government and other sectors, and provides full details of the member's accredited services, contact details and links to their own website.

NATA's offices across Australia also receive calls from prospective clients seeking to have products tested, inspected or calibrated. Callers are given the contact details of NATA members who can meet their needs.

A Benchmark for Performance

Accreditation is a means of assessing, in the public interest, the technical competence and integrity of organisations offering testing, calibration, measurement, examination and inspection services. Accreditation can highlight gaps in capability, thereby providing the opportunity for improved organisational efficiency and outputs.

NATA accreditation benefits facilities by allowing them to determine whether they are performing their work correctly and to appropriate standards, and provides them with a benchmark for maintaining that competence. Many facilities operate in isolation to their peers, and otherwise would rarely, if ever, receive any independent technical evaluation as a measure of their performance.

A regular NATA assessment checks all aspects of a facility's operations related to consistently producing accurate and dependable data. Areas for improvement are identified and discussed, and a detailed report provided at the end of each visit. Follow-up action, where necessary, is reviewed by NATA so the facility can be confident that it has taken the appropriate corrective action. In addition to commercial services, many manufacturing organisations use NATA accreditation to ensure the testing of their products by their own in-house laboratories is being performed correctly.

Many industries, such as the construction materials industry, routinely specify NATA accreditation for suppliers of testing services. In the medical area, accreditation is required by the Commonwealth Government for the tests provided by pathology laboratories to be eligible for Medicare rebates. Other industrial contractors that want to minimise their risks also specify testing to be performed by NATA-accredited laboratories.

The easiest and most effective means of identifying your facility as competent and reliable is by using the Accreditation symbol on your stationery, promotional and advertising material, and reports of testing, calibration and inspection activities.

For those members whose test, calibration and inspection reports accompany materials, goods and services exported to foreign markets, or just seeking international recognition for their domestic services, NATA provides the most widely recognised accreditation in the world.

Accredited facilities are encouraged to use the Accredited CAB Combined ILAC MRA Mark on their test/calibration/inspection reports. This is of particular importance if those reports accompany products exported to overseas economies as this provides unequivocal assurance that the product has been tested/inspected in a facility whose competence is attested by its NATA accreditation.

NATA News has been one of the best sources of information on accreditation practices in Australia for more than 30 years. NATA News focuses on engaging articles and providing independent, expert technical information to members. It is sent free of charge to members on a bi-monthly basis.

NATA actively promotes its members and helps them promote themselves. As well, NATA is committed to raising general industry and community awareness about the value of using accredited services.

The NATA website provides access to a huge library of free on-line publications covering good laboratory practice, application of international standards, technical information and much more.

Training courses in laboratory management, quality control and auditing are conducted and members receive a discount on the training course fees.
An insurance package is also available to NATA members through Arthur J Gallagher (Aus.) Pty Ltd. The policy includes cover for the following extensions:
