NATA's Volunteer Assessors

NATA relies heavily on the specialised knowledge and experience of its volunteer technical assessors.

Technical assessors work closely with and provide support to the NATA lead assessor (NATA staff member) during the assessment of facilities.

Many assessors find their work for NATA benefits both themselves and their employer. By volunteering, assessors put something back into their profession through the peer review process.

Employers support the NATA accreditation process by releasing staff to participate as volunteers in assessments. This is especially true as assessments are conducted during business hours. The volunteer work offered to NATA is well recognised within the scientific and technical fraternity as it provides additional professional development opportunities through the exchange of ideas which occurs during assessments

New technical assessors are required to attend a one-day training course within two years of being appointed, which NATA runs regularly throughout the country. This course is offered at no charge to new technical assessors

Though assessors are not paid, all their travel and other expenses are met by NATA.

What are the requirements to be a NATA technical assessor?

NATA’s technical assessors require the following qualities:

  • Professional expertise and experience;
  • Knowledge of testing and measurement or inspection;
  • Understanding of facility management;
  • Analytical approach and an ability to critically evaluate;
  • Ability to work as a team member;
  • Communication skills and commitment to the accreditation process.

NATA has need for assessors in specific areas and there may not be a need for a technical assessor in some areas of testing as there are sufficient numbers to cover the workload.  Technical assessors are used as required and there is no set number of jobs that are to be undertaken.  A technical assessor can advise NATA of the maximum number of jobs that they can do in a year.

As well as attending on-site visits, technical assessors are expected to provide follow up advice and guidance to the lead assessor on the facility’s response to matters raised at the on-site visit.

In support of an application to become a technical assessor the following must be provided:

  • Recommendation from another technical assessor;
  • CV;
  • Evidence of the applicant having a sound knowledge of NATA accreditation criteria; and
  • Evidence of any work experience in a NATA accredited facility would be desirable.
