Diagnostic imaging seminars popular

More than 240 attendees representing hundreds more imaging practices operating throughout Australia attended NATA’s free diagnostic imaging seminars recently.

The seminars, held in most state capitals during May were designed to assist diagnostic imaging practices to understand the new registration and accreditation requirements of the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA).

Dr Caroline Scarman, NATA’s Medical Advisor, outlined the requirements, and explained the difference between them which are mandatory for most imaging practices, and the voluntary accreditation scheme offered by NATA in association with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR). Dr Scarman also introduced, for the first time, a new certification program offered by NATA’s subsidiary, NCS International Pty Ltd. This certification program offers an ideal stepping stone for those practices that want to go beyond DoHA’s standards but are not yet ready to achieve RANZCR/NATA accreditation.

In addition to Dr Scarman’s presentations, speakers from the RANZCR discussed the development of the latest RANZCR Standards for Practice Quality and how implementation of these will help to ensure best practice. The Sydney meeting on May 16 was also attended by Don Swinbourne, CEO, Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists, and Alan Patterson, NATA Chief Executive (pictured).

Attendees were also able to hear from those who had actually achieved RANZCR/NATA accreditation of their medical imaging practices, or had been involved in their assessment. The experiences ranged from smaller practices to larger establishments such as The Alfred in Melbourne and St Vincent’s Private in Sydney. All practitioners spoke highly of their experiences with NATA, and the added value that RANZCR/NATA accreditation has provided.
