Working with Business

Businesses fall into three categories, stakeholders mandating or encouraging the use of NATA accredited facilities, users of testing, measurement or inspection activities specifying the use of NATA-accredited facilities, or businesses operating a testing or measurement laboratory and/or inspection authority that is accredited by NATA. The information below covers the first two roles.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation determines the technical competence and integrity of organisations offering conformity assessment services such as testing, inspection and calibration. Find out more about accreditation.

How can accreditation help businesses?

Companies buy independent conformity assessment services either through choice (to reduce the risk of product failure for example) or as a consequence of legal requirements (such as health and safety regulations). Most commonly these services are calibration of equipment, product testing and inspection of equipment.

The majority of NATA accredited organisations are small businesses. Gaining accreditation sets you apart from the competition, and enables you to compete with larger organisations. It will open doors to new markets where accreditation is a ‘passport to trade’, and for the bottom line, it can deliver efficiencies and improve profit. The How to Become Accredited information will guide you through the process.

For businesses requiring assessment services, selecting an accredited organisation is an essential tool for decision-making and risk management.

Organisations can save time and money by selecting an accredited and therefore competent supplier. Reliable measurements, tests and inspections are carried out in compliance with best practices to limit product failure and reduce down time and control manufacturing costs.

Accreditation to internationally-recognised standards can provide a competitive advantage and facilitate access to export markets. (see Global Trading Network)

Using accredited services can:

  • de-risk your procurement by taking the guesswork out of choosing an evaluation body
  • open up new business opportunities as accreditation is specified by procurement officials
  • demonstrate due diligence in the event of legal action
  • help with knowledge transfer and product development since accredited evaluation bodies can be a good source of impartial advice

Many companies run the risk of undermining their long-term success by purchasing independent assessment services that are not NATA accredited. NATA has developed several industry specific guides as resources to assist businesses select accredited conformity assessment services that are appropriate for their needs.
